Fabric Art DIY
Sun Bleaching Fabric
from Sharpies and Fabric DIY Part I
Today is gorgeous!! Warm, dry, blue sky, low humidity!!! Such a relief from the hot and muggy weather we have been having! I have been feeling very experimental lately and have hit on wanting to do some fiber art – or fabric art. I started out doing the Sharpies and Fabric activities with a shared link I posted about. Loved the watercolor effect! Isn’t that pink pony adorable?? I want to make a simple dress or tee shirt for my granddaughter with that. I also may make some small fabric pouches for cell phones etc. As usual, I have lots of ideas.
Anyways from there, I started to do some Sun Bleaching on a big piece of purple fabric I got at the thrift store. Since it is so nice out, I laid it out across my picnic table. I initially started out with leaves, flowers etc. but remembered all the stencils I have so quickly grabbed those! I am so glad I did.
leaves, flowers on fabric to sun bleach.
Here I just laid some leaves, branches, and flowers on the fabric and then sprayed some diluted bleach on it. The areas in the sun that were sprayed will bleach out and leave an imprint on the fabric. I also tried some wire sculptures of mine to see what it would do. The imprint was too faint but maybe on different fabric, it would have worked…worth trying again….
The results were okay…. I also sprinkled some alcohol ink to try to jazz it up.
At this point, I got my horse stencils and laid them out on the fabric. I made sure to alternate the angle and direction they were laid so I can use the fabric without worrying about lining up pieces that I would need to be done if they were all set down facing the same way. I also used whatever heavy objects I had close to keep them down while they ‘baked’ in the sun.
I liked the effect so much decided to do another layer and sprayed more bleach, then laid the stencils down in a different spot and sprayed a fabric paint called Tulip Color Shot in Bubblegum Pink and Aubergine. I love how it turned out!
